SCAT Crankshafts sponsored this 383 cid small block Chevy engine that was “Engine of the Week” in Engine Builder Magazine. Robbie Capps of Capps Performance Engineering built this 383 SBC engine for a customer’s restored ‘73 Z/28 Camaro in Asheboro, North Carolina.
This high-end build features a two-bolt block, a SCAT rotating assembly, a Rollmaster timing set, gas-ported rings from Total Seal, a street manifold and a Quick Fuel carburetor. Capps Performance Engineering went with an E3 ignition system, a billet distributor and spark plugs, for final touches on this build. The engine produced 565 horsepower and 570 ft.-lbs. of torque on the dyno using smaller headers.
What we tried to do was make the car look all original, but took all the performance parts of the car – the engine, transmission and rear end – and upgraded those areas without taking away from the originality of the Z28. It’s a super, super nice car and it’s really turned out well.
