SCAT Crankshafts is proud to be a sponsor of the Santa Maria High School (SMHS) Drag Racing Team. The club was founded in 2007 and is located in Santa Maria, California. Although named after SMHS, the group features students from both Santa Maria and Righetti high schools.
The racing club is coed and led by Brayan Flores and John Graack. Students on the race team are Brayan Flores co-crew chief, John Graack co-crew chief (Righetti student), Blake Almaguer (Righetti student), and Saints Hazel Perez, Alizé Torres, Jose Pizano, Gabriel Chavez, Heri Larios, and Alberto Solis.
The SMHS team won their first drag racing trophy with their white 1968 Chevrolet Camaro in November 2019. The team’s title was in the 35-car D/Gas Class at the American Nostalgia Racing Association competition
This past week, the team competed in the season-opening NHRA drag race at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona. The group was the first high school team to race a car in a National Hot Rod Association race. After the solid qualifying runs, the team was back on track on Friday for final eliminations in the Super Street Class/10.90 Index Class. Although they didn’t qualify for the Saturday races, we are proud of how far they have come and we are looking forward to their future races!
